MENTAL HEALTH CARE TIPS DURING SOCIAL DISTANCING
If you are frequent Traveller and an avid traveler, this will especially prove a hard time for you. Your getaway plans, work trips, etc., are all canceled now. But in the grand scheme of things, this is just a small price to pay in order to come out stronger on at the end of this. But given the present circumstances, being stuck indoors can also take a toll on your mental health, particularly those with pre-existing conditions of anxiety, panic attacks, and OCD. It is natural to be concerned about your family, friends and the general well being of the society. Mental stress and anxiety can manifest itself in various physical forms as well such as elevated heart rate, insomnia, digestive issues, and fatigue. Here are some tips on how to deal
with them and take care of your mental well-being.
Cut back on social media
Our brains are wired to problem solve. According to mental health experts, when we are already fearful, our minds naturally seek out stimuli in your external environment to reinforce the feeling of fear. The brain then deletes, distorts and generalizes all incoming information that does not align with your current emotional state or beliefs. So, if you spend a significant amount of time following the news, it reinforces more reason to worry— thus creating a vicious cycle.
Stay connected
Even during the times of social distancing, it is important to stay connected with your family, friends and colleague. Make use of the technology and check-in with your loved one via phone calls, texts, social media and video conferencing. This helps restore a sense an of normalcy through sharing feelings and relieving stress.
Stay updated
It is important to stay updated on the latest goings on in the world. But it is as important to get information only the trusted and authentic sources only. It is essential that you try and verify the news you receive from your friends and family on social media. Fake news is dominant phenomenon in our societies, worse than the coronavirus itself.
Create a Routine
Just because you are staying at home indefinitely, it does not mean you have to give up on your routines as they also help reinforce the sense of normalcy. Studies prove that consistency in your daily lives can help create a feeling of certainty and stability. Break your day with a to-do list of things you want to achieve everyday and take one day at a time. This is also the perfect time for self-care. Eat healthily, get plenty of sleep and exercise daily. Get fit by the time when you go back to society.
Avoid burnout and fight boredom
If you are working from home, set strict time limits to avoid being overwhelmed and make time to unwind. Make time to unwind and use it to catchup on the TV and Netflix you fell behind on. Do things that will elevate your mental well-being such as reading a book, taking up a new hobby, learning a new skill, etc.
